The project can be found in Ruzafa, a lively and trendy neighbourhood in Valencia where many young families and couples choose to live. A central area with a great location, surrounded by the Central Park and Turia Gardens, and local businesses that make for a welcoming neighbourhood.

The home stands on the top floor of a building dating from 1956 with a typical layout of compartmentalised, dark and poorly ventilated spaces.

In order to reduce the size of the corridor and bring life to the daytime spaces with a specific function, we decided to change the bathroom from its original place and therefore gain a more spacious, open living room-kitchen.

This new layout also gives us space to create the family bathroom and a small toilet for guests, leaving the other rooms as they were at the start.

For extra storage, as the size of the toilet works better with a lower ceiling height, we will take advantage of this space to build a mezzanine substructure above it to store belongings that are not required for daily use.

We will also expand and change the windows in the bathroom to let in natural light for pleasant showers and a healthy, intimate space.

Adapting the home to current times and the climate change that is just around the corner, we will insulate the front and back façades to make the spaces more habitable.

Taking advantage of the redistribution of spaces, we will change the position and increase the size of all windows that are not on the main façade to make the home more comfortable, bright and airy, integrating and bringing consistency to the shared daytime spaces.

In order to highlight the home’s original architecture, we will try to recover all elements that are in good condition; these include the scotias, mouldings and rosettes found on the ceilings. This will lend height to most spaces. Combining today’s technical requirements with architectural elements from the past that knew nothing of the future needs to come will be a difficult task.

Our projects aim to improve all aspects of the spaces for a better quality of life.
